Centered on the “Power of Place,” the museum is situated on the original site where African ancestors arrived. It presents a panoramic narrative of the African American journey—from African roots and the transatlantic slave trade to the contemporary era—focusing on their culture, resilience, and contributions.
The main exhibition hall is a single-story structure with a floor area of approximately 4,200 square meters. The building features a uniquely horizontal, elongated form that appears to float above the historic site. This very location was the point of arrival for nearly half of all enslaved Africans who set foot on the North American continent. We are deeply honored to have provided the crucial custom display case system for this institution. With the most professional and respectful design, we aim to safeguard this collective memory intertwined with trauma and triumph, oppression and resistance, allowing silent artifacts to speak of profound history.
The museum houses 8 core galleries and 1 special exhibition gallery, narrating its story through a wealth of artifacts, documents, multimedia, and interactive installations. The exhibited items span centuries, with extremely diverse materials and forms.
We provided a highly customized modular display wall system and freestanding display cases. These cases are designed to flexibly accommodate exhibits of varying scales, from historical documents and audiovisual materials to everyday objects.
For replicas and large folk artifacts, we designed custom wall-mounted display platforms. These platforms integrate seamlessly with the gallery’s floor and backdrop. While providing stable support, they create the illusion that the artifacts remain within their original historical and social context, enhancing the authenticity and emotional impact of the narrative.
For this project, we supplied the museum with a total of 21 display cases, including single-unit counters and wall-mounted cases.
The collaboration with the International African American Museum marks a milestone in our mission to “preserve human memory through exhibition technology.” What we provided was not merely a set of display cases, but a holistic exhibition ecosystem that deeply integrates preventative conservation, immersive storytelling, and architectural philosophy.
