Museum of Pontevedra
Old Town of Pontevedra, Galicia, Spain 23.6
The core exhibition themes of the Pontevedra Museum revolve around “the history and cultural heritage of Galicia,” systematically presenting the region’s development from ancient times to the present through archaeological finds, religious art, local aristocratic collections, maritime culture, and contemporary artworks. The recent renovation project of the Santa Clara Convent further emphasises the concept of “integrating historic architecture with contemporary public cultural spaces,” creating a continuous cultural experience that links traditional heritage, community activities, and modern exhibitions.
During the recent expansion of its exhibition areas and the renovation of its historic buildings, the Pontevedra Museum has needed to simultaneously upgrade its existing display systems to meet the multiple requirements of long-term preservation of precious artifacts, modern display experiences, and adaptation to historic spaces. With the opening of new exhibition areas such as the Santa Clara Convent, the original museum display cabinets no longer adequately meet the standards for constant temperature and humidity, security protection, low-reflection display, and flexible layout. Therefore, the museum hopes to introduce a customised display case solution that, while protecting Galicia’s historical artifacts, enhances the overall visual quality and international visitor experience of the exhibitions, and achieves a harmonious integration between modern exhibition equipment and the historic architectural spaces.

After completing the upgrade to the new generation of customised museum display cabinets systems, the Pontevedra Museum will further promote the integrated operation of the Santa Clara Convent section and the main museum system. It will continue to expand exhibitions related to Galician history, religious art, and contemporary culture, while strengthening its capacity for international touring exhibitions and public education programmes. The museum also plans to create a regional cultural centre that combines heritage preservation, academic research, and public cultural experiences through more open exhibition spaces, digital display technologies, and higher standards for the conservation environment. This will further enhance its influence within the cultural tourism network of northwestern Spain.

The Pontevedra Museum is one of the largest provincial museums in Spain. Its core facility, the new Castelao Building, has a floor area of approximately 10,000 square meters across six floors, while the newly incorporated Santa Clara Convent area covers a total site area of over 12,000 square meters. The museum’s collection spans archaeology, painting, sculpture, ceramics, ethnography, documents, photography, and other categories, having long preserved a vast number of historical artifacts and artistic works from the Galicia region. The total collection size amounts to hundreds of thousands of items.
For stone or ceramic sculptures, we adopted freestanding high museum display cabinets. These cases are tall, with fully transparent glass on all four sides and a separate base, allowing the exhibits to become visual focal points in the gallery. They are commonly used for sculptures and small three-dimensional artifacts.
For ceramic specimens, we adopted table museum display cabinets. These are low in height with a transparent glass top, making them suitable for visitors to view the objects up close from above.
To meet the different display requirements of various artifacts, we produced over 60 showcases in 10 different models for the museum. These include table showcases, freestanding high showcases, wall‑length showcases, and others.
For the pottery artifacts, we adopted wall‑length museum showcases. The panels are made of low‑reflective laminated tempered glass, which offers UV protection and impact resistance. The high‑airtightness structure, combined with a constant temperature and humidity system, provides a stable preservation environment for pottery, which is sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity.
For the large sailboat model, we adopted a freestanding square museum showcases This type of case is ideal for displaying large exhibits, allowing visitors to view the object from a 360‑degree perspective. The frame structure is made of aluminum alloy, offering high structural strength and corrosion resistance. The transparent panels are made of ultra‑clear tempered glass, which is low‑reflective and UV‑protective.
