Museum of Prehistory and Archaeology of Cantabria
Santander city, Spain 2023.12
The core theme of the Museum of Prehistory and Archaeology of Cantabria is to present the complete 300,000-year history of human evolution from prehistory to the Middle Ages, based on the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Paleolithic rock art and archaeological discoveries in the Cantabria region, through modern interactive technology and a gender equality perspective. The exhibition uses immersive scene reconstructions, virtual archaeology experiences, and more than 2,500 precious artifacts to deeply explore the relationship between humans and nature, the origins of art, and the diverse aspects of social life on this land.
The old exhibition facilities of the Museum of Prehistory and Archaeology of Cantabria could no longer accommodate its rich prehistoric cultural heritage or meet the growing demands for artifact preservation. To further enhance the display level of Cantabria’s archaeological heritage, the Spanish government, together with the European Investment Bank (EIB), provided loans and support to launch the construction of a new museum building and a comprehensive upgrade of its exhibition facilities. The core challenge of this exhibition renewal lies in designing display cases that combine aesthetics, functionality, and the highest level of preventive conservation for a large number of extremely precious prehistoric artifacts.

After the completion of the customized display case renovation, the museum plans to officially open its new building by the end of 2026. By then, MUPAC will be positioned as a leading European center for prehistoric archaeological research and visitor experience, integrating research, education, and tourism. As part of the overall urban development plan of Santander, the new museum — with its prime city-center location and adherence to sustainable development standards — aims to become a symbol of regional cultural revitalization and a key driver of local economic growth.
The Museum of Prehistory and Archaeology of Cantabria has a total building area of 18,441 m². It has three floors in total. The ground floor is public space, while the second and third floors house various exhibition halls. The museum has approximately 2,600 artifacts.
For the Roman marble statues, we used freestanding artifact display case. The frame is made of high-strength aluminum alloy, which is rust-proof and structurally stable. The low-reflective laminated glass provides distortion‑free, low‑glare viewing and helps prevent the statues from aging.
For the ancient bronze ritual vessels, we used freestanding central artifact display case. The main frame of this type of case is made of high-strength aluminum alloy, ensuring rust resistance and strong load‑bearing capacity. The ultra-clear low‑reflective laminated glass offers four‑sided transparency, low glare, and UV protection, slowing down the aging of the bronze.
Display case types: To meet the display requirements of different artifacts, we produced over 80 display cases in 12 different models for the museum, including wall‑to‑wall display cases, freestanding vertical cases, table cases, and more.
For animal bone fossils, we used wall‑to‑wall museum showcase. The elongated design of these cases fully presents the overall form of large skeletal remains. The combination of low‑reflection glass and top spotlights eliminates reflective interference, making bone details clearly visible.
For the deer‑shaped iron object, we used a freestanding table museum showcase. This type of museum showcase features four‑sided, fully transparent low‑reflection glass, which reduces glare and blocks ultraviolet light, allowing visitors to appreciate the object from multiple angles in its entirety.
