Shanghai Museum East
Shanghai City China 2024.2
The core exhibition theme of the Shanghai Museum East is to be a “world-class ancient Chinese art museum.” Through a layout of “8 general history galleries + 5 thematic galleries,” it systematically presents the 5,000-year development of Chinese art, while integrating modern display methods such as digital interactivity and open conservation.
The renovation and upgrading of the display cases at the Shanghai Museum East are primarily driven by the comprehensive exhibition upgrade launched after the museum’s full completion. The exhibition space has been significantly expanded, allowing a large number of national‑treasure artifacts that could not be displayed before to be unveiled. To align with the new exhibition narrative and meet higher technical standards such as constant temperature and humidity, the original display cases were no longer suitable. Hence, a set of professional museum vitrines with more advanced functions, better capable of highlighting the value of the artifacts, needed to be customized.

After our team completed the renovation and upgrade of the museum vitrines, the Shanghai Museum East will focus on three major development directions: first, building a “5+X” museum cluster by adding a West Wing and a South Wing, forming a coordinated five‑museum network; second, comprehensively upgrading the smart experience by leveraging technologies such as AI‑powered guided tours, AR navigation, and a fully AI sign language guide to create a museum of the future; third, continuously launching major special exhibitions and deepening digital immersive displays, ultimately achieving a full‑scale upgrade from physical expansion to content and service enhancement.

The total floor area of the Shanghai Museum East is approximately 113,200 square meters (some sources say nearly 120,000 square meters). The building has six floors above ground and two floors underground. It houses a total of 20 exhibition halls and interactive experience spaces, with more than 15,000 cultural relics on regular display.
For stone carvings and figurative sculptures, we used standalone through museum glass cases. These cases are large and spacious inside, suitable for displaying multiple artifacts at once. The low-reflective laminated glass panels reduce glare and provide UV protection. The aluminum alloy frame ensures structural stability.
For ancient stone sculptures, we adopted panoramic standalone museum glass cases. Featuring a fully transparent glass structure on all four sides, these cases allow for 360° unobstructed viewing. The low-reflective laminated glass panels provide UV protection and minimize glare. The aluminum alloy frame ensures structural stability.
Display case types: To meet the display requirements of different cultural relics, we produced over 100 display cases in 15 different types for the museum, including standalone through cases, table cases, panoramic standalone cases, and so on.
For ancient textile and embroidery artifacts, we adopted panoramic standalone tall museum glass cases. These museum glass cases are fully transparent on all four sides, allowing visitors a 360° unobstructed view. The low-reflective laminated glass panels reduce glare and provide UV protection. The aluminum alloy frame ensures structural stability.
For ceramic exhibits, we adopted table museum glass cases. These museum glass cases are lower in height with a wide tabletop, allowing visitors to view the entirety and details of the objects at eye level from a close distance. The low-reflective laminated glass panels reduce glare and provide UV protection. The aluminum alloy frame ensures structural stability and strong load-bearing capacity.
