The National Maritime Museum
Amsterdam, Netherlands 2015.8
The museum offers a comprehensive presentation of how the sea has shaped Dutch culture and history, encompassing profound themes such as maritime technology, global trade, naval history, colonialism, and cultural exchange.
The planning and development goals for this exhibition upgrade were very clear: while respecting the Baroque historical building, to introduce modern interactive exhibition technologies, transforming static artifact displays into an immersive journey through maritime history.
The main body of the museum is housed in a historic arsenal building constructed in 1656. The exhibition spaces are distributed across the east, west, and north wings, featuring some 30 exhibition rooms. The collection comprises over 400,000 objects, including an extensive array of ship models, maps, paintings, navigational instruments, weapons, and artifacts.
For large three-dimensional ship models and sculptures: We designed multi-angle freestanding cases and large connected display channels. Utilizing low-reflection laminated glass, these cases ensure both the physical security of the artifacts and provide a glare-free viewing experience from all directions.
For precious flat artifacts (ancient maps, oil paintings, documents): We supplied the Map Hall with a large quantity of wall-mounted climate-controlled (constant temperature and humidity) display cases.
We supplied the exhibition hall with a total of 21 display cases across 7 distinct models. The selection included styles such as freestanding cases, wall-mounted cases, and counters.
This is a custom-designed globe-themed display cabinet for the museum: Crafted from high-transparency anti-glare glass and featuring an integrated ambient lighting system, the soft, warm light precisely illuminates a collection of antique decorative globes within. It accentuates the intricate texture of their hand-painted surfaces while enhancing the historical ambiance of the exhibits against the clear glass backdrop.
This is a modular, custom-designed display system for multi-category exhibits: Featuring a dark-toned cabinet with a layered layout of transparent compartments, it organizes diverse artifacts—such as porcelain, ancient texts, paintings, and objects—into distinct display niches. Each niche is equipped with its own dedicated, soft lighting.
