Every few months a curator sends us a tender document that lists “museum display case” and nothing more. That single line tells me the project will be painful. A museum grade display case is not a retail showcase with a heftier invoice – it is a sealed, tested, documented piece of conservation equipment that happens to be furniture. The difference lives in the materials, the gasket detail, and the numbers behind RH stability, and those are precisely the things you cannot see in a product photo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here is how we build and verify cases in our own workshop – and what you should demand from any fabricator before signing off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which materials actually qualify as conservation-grade?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Start with the substrate, not the glass. Most display case specifications we receive skip this entirely, which is a mistake – the plinth, back panels, and any drawer or compartment inside the case off-gas far more than the glazing ever will. We only accept low-VOC MDF and laminates that have passed the Oddy test, and we insist on formaldehyde emission data from the board supplier before material enters the shop. Standard-grade MDF can push VOCs into a sealed microclimate for years; archival quality construction is cheaper than re-treating a corroded silver collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the structure: powder-coated steel finished in a nonproprietary color system such as RAL keeps things inert and re-finishable, and clean lines and neutral colours keep the case from competing with the exhibit. Halogen and fluorescent lighting have no place in a museum environment. Fibre optic lighting or LED lighting only – heat is a pollutant too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honest answer: it depends on the object, and I am suspicious of fabricators who claim otherwise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Acrylic cases are lighter, resist impact, and block a meaningful share of UV, which suits travelling exhibits and wall cases mounted high. They scratch, they hold static, and they demand strict cleaning protocols from museum staff. Glass – specifically low-iron glass with an anti-reflective coating – is what we specify when visibility matters: around 91% light transmission, under 1% reflectance when coated, and no optical distortion across a large pane. For high-value items we use laminated safety glass, whose interlayer blocks UV below roughly 400 nm and holds the pane together if it fails. Tempered glass belongs on access panels and structural elements, not on the viewing face of a quality glass build.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One thing worth insisting on: ask for transmission and reflectance figures verified to EN 410. “Museum quality glass” is marketing language; a measured datasheet is a specification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do sealing and air exchange rates protect the microclimate?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The seal is where design and construction succeed or fail, because environmental control inside a leaky case is just an expensive fan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A well-built case targets an air exchange rate at or below 0.1 volumes per day, held by closed-cell silicone gaskets compressed along every hinged door and access panel. In our shop the gasket groove is CNC-machined, never hand-routed, so compression stays even across the full perimeter – and every welded steel frame gets a 0.2 mm flatness re-inspection after grinding, because gasket compression against a warped frame is a leak you will not find until the datalogger finds it for you. Dust ingress, pollutant ingress, and RH fluctuation all travel through the same gap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Case types matter here too. Freestanding cases and wall cases with full-perimeter access doors are harder to seal than a table case with a single hinged lid. Where the exhibit needs better security, specify concealed locks with restricted access to locks rather than external cams that advertise the entry point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What environmental control standards should a museum setting demand?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Three numbers decide whether a museum grade display case is genuine or merely heavy furniture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Relative humidity comes first. For most organic materials we design passive climate control – conditioned silica gel in a dedicated compartment or drawer, sized to buffer the case volume – targeting stability within the band set out in EN 15757 rather than chasing an exact setpoint. A case that holds RH within \u00b15% across a seasonal cycle will outperform one that claims \u00b11% but leaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Light comes second. ICOM guidance puts sensitive objects at roughly 50 lux with UV below about 10 \u00b5W\/lumen, and cumulative exposure is cumulative damage. Fibre optic lighting or remote LED sources keep heat out of the display area entirely; whatever lighting system you choose, the lamp itself should sit outside the microclimate, on a dimmable, programmable circuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Air quality comes third. Beyond low-VOC materials, activated-carbon filtration handles external pollutants in urban museum environments. Volatile vapours inside a sealed case have nowhere to go – which is the entire point, provided you sealed clean materials in there to begin with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do you match display case specifications to your exhibits?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Work backwards from the object. Size, fragility, and sensitivity to humidity and UV dictate glazing, gasket class, and whether the case needs a humidity-controlled compartment. A 360-degree freestanding case suits sculpture; a wall case or pedestal suits flatwork and small objects; drawer sections suit study collections that museum staff need to reach regularly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then hold your shortlist of fabricators to documentation: Oddy test results, air exchange rate reports, glass datasheets, finish schedules. Building techniques that survive tender scrutiny are the ones worth paying for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
