Royal Collections Gallery
Madrid, Spain 2022,6
The core mission of the Royal Collection is to showcase the artistic tastes and the history of collecting of the Spanish monarchy. It is not merely an art museum but a flowing narrative of Spanish history. The Habsburg dynasty is highlighted through tapestries, religious art, and early royal regalia, while the Bourbon dynasty focuses on paintings, fine furniture, porcelain, and decorative arts. The temporary exhibition halls and the royal carriage display feature large royal carriages, armor, and contemporary restoration techniques.
The project background of the Royal Collection is a “peak dialogue between historical depth and modern technology.” We are not merely crafting display cases; we are providing an invisible, intelligent protective barrier for a royal collection system that spans 500 years, ensuring that these priceless treasures are revitalized within a minimalist modern architectural setting.
After the completion of our project, the Royal Collection has the following plans for the future: first,to become the fourth cultural pillar following Madrid’s “Art Triangle,”with an expected annual reception of over one million visitors. Second, to carry out digital upgrades to the museum, continuously introducing AR navigation and smart display case monitoring technologies. Third,to pursue future inter‑museum exchanges of cultural relics and temporary special exhibitions.
The total floor area of the Spanish Royal Collection is approximately 40,475 square meters. The building has 14 floors, with the core exhibition area open to the public concentrated in the main exhibition halls on the lower 3 floors. The inaugural exhibition features about 650 selected treasures. The types of exhibits include master paintings, giant tapestries, royal armor, large‑scale artifacts, and decorative arts.
For the royal gold and silverware and crystal glass tableware, we adopted table‑top display cases. The low‑profile design of these cases allows visitors to view the details of the artifacts from a close overhead perspective, appreciating the gilding, carving, and crystal‑cutting techniques. The UV‑protective glass effectively prevents discoloration of metal artifacts and embrittlement of glass materials.
For the royal regalia, we adopted freestanding tall display cases. The all‑around transparency and tall design of these cases allow visitors a 360‑degree view of the craftsmanship details and gemstone settings of the crowns. The independent display enhances the sanctity and rarity of the exhibits, making them the visual focal point of the exhibition hall.
Display case types: To accommodate the display needs of different artifacts, we produced over 80 display cases in 15 different models for the museum, including table‑top cases, freestanding tall cases, and full‑length wall cases.
For the royal religious ceremonial vestments, we adopted freestanding tall display cases. The all‑around transparent design of these cases allows visitors a 360‑degree view of the details and three‑dimensional form of the garments. An integrated soft lighting system highlights the embroidery and fabric textures while avoiding direct intense light on the artifacts.
For the royal religious textiles and reliquaries, we adopted all‑around transparent display cases. The all‑around transparency combined with the floor‑to‑ceiling design allows visitors a 360‑degree view of the overall arrangement and detailed craftsmanship of the grouped artifacts. The ultra‑clear low‑reflectivity glass offers high light transmittance while filtering out over 99% of ultraviolet rays.
