Okayama Art Museum

Okayama Prefecture, Japan 2024.03

The museum centers on “The Art of Okayama,” systematically collecting and exhibiting paintings, calligraphy, oil paintings, crafts, and sculptures from ancient to modern times that have deep-rooted connections to the Okayama region, highlighting distinctive local cultural characteristics.

From 2023 to 2024, in response to increasingly stringent artifact preservation standards and to enhance the immersive viewing experience for visitors, a systematic update plan for the display facilities in the core permanent exhibition halls was initiated.
The main exhibition building is a multi-story structure with a total exhibition area of approximately 3,000 square meters. Its collection system is vast, encompassing ancient paintings and calligraphy, Japanese paintings (Nihonga), oil paintings, crafts, and sculptures, among other categories. The permanent exhibition “The Art of Okayama” regularly rotates, displaying hundreds of selected artifacts from the collection.
For this project, we supplied the museum with a total of 21 display cases, including freestanding and wall-mounted cases.
For Precious Ancient Paintings, we installed professional-grade, sealed climate-controlled (constant temperature and humidity) display cases. These cases integrate a high-precision environmental control system that maintains fluctuations within the ideal preservation range for artifacts. They utilize a professional LED lighting system with over 99% ultraviolet filtration, ensuring optimal viewing brightness while achieving “zero UV” damage to protect fragile ancient pigments and fibers.
For Crafts and Three-Dimensional Artifacts, through adjustable embedded spotlights, the artifacts are illuminated from multiple angles, precisely highlighting their three-dimensional forms, unique glazes, and fine textures, allowing the beauty of traditional craftsmanship to be fully showcased.
The Okayama Art Museum’s collection spans a great length of time and includes a wide variety of materials, from light-sensitive ancient silk and paper paintings to substantial modern oil paintings and three-dimensional sculptures, each with distinct preservation requirements. The core challenge of the project was: how to construct a modern exhibition foundation for these precious artifacts that achieves differentiated, precise protection while optimizing visual storytelling, all without compromising the aesthetic integrity of the existing architectural space.
This custom-designed Japanese minimalist-style freestanding display case for the museum is constructed from transparent acrylic material and paired with light-colored tiered display platforms. It harmonizes with the minimalist aesthetic characteristic of Japanese design while showcasing the textural qualities of the ceramics to their fullest advantage. Ceramic artworks of various forms are arranged at varying heights on the platforms, creating clearly defined visual layers.
