The Thousand Tang Epitaphs Museum

Luoyang City, China 2022.12

As the “only museum in China dedicated exclusively to epitaphs,” its core mission is the systematic presentation of the grand history encapsulated in the “Stone-Carved Tang History.” Through the unique medium of epitaphs, it reveals the social structure, prominent families, calligraphic art, and processes of ethnic integration from the Tang dynasty through successive eras.

To enhance the preservation standards of cultural relics and meet modern exhibition and academic needs, a new museum construction project with an investment of 1.2 billion RMB was launched. Moving beyond traditional static displays, the plan is to create an integrated smart platform for “protection, research, education, and experience.” Through immersive experiences, digital interactions (such as the voice-controlled system for Empress Wu Zetian’s created characters), and diverse social education activities, it aims to revitalize the artifacts, making the millennia-old stone inscriptions “come alive” in the present.
The new museum has a total floor area of 7,200 square meters, comprising one floor above ground and one floor below ground. Its collection includes over 2,000 epitaph stones from various dynasties, of which 1,191 are from the Tang dynasty, ranking among the top in the country both in quantity and value.
For Large, Heavy Epitaphs, For the core epitaphs in exhibition halls such as “Chronicles of Inscriptions,” we designed super load-bearing independent display cases. The case structure utilizes reinforced steel framing and high-load laminated glass, ensuring absolute safety.
In exhibition halls like “Wei and Tang Calligraphic Traces” which display valuable silk-mounted rubbings or delicate stone materials, we installed professional-grade, sealed climate-controlled (constant temperature and humidity) display cases. These cases integrate a precise environmental control system to maintain stable temperature and humidity. They are also equipped with professional lighting that filters over 99% of ultraviolet radiation, achieving zero light damage protection while showcasing the ink artistry of calligraphy and the fine details of the stone carvings.
We supplied the museum with a total of 47 display cases, including freestanding cases, wall-mounted cases, and counters. Our collaboration with the Qian Tangzhi Zhai Museum was not merely a successful equipment supply project but also a joint exploration into “how to make the stones speak.” The customized display case system we provided functions like a sophisticated “time-space converter.”
The custom-designed, oversized contextual freestanding display case for the museum is constructed entirely from high-transparency, anti-glare glass. The enlarged dimensions are complemented by a reinforced counter structure and an inclined display stand. This design accommodates the display of stone steles of various sizes while facilitating clear viewing of the artifacts’ details for visitors.
The museum display case is not arranged in isolation. It is integrated with an overhead light box, creating a contextual interplay with landscape-themed text elements.
